From BVCS eNews “Community Bulletin” to “English Teaching Volunteer Service Program for Overseas Youth” in Taiwan:
Jacklyn Wang’s Summer Journey
Summer has just wrapped up, and we are excited to share the inspiring journey of Jacklyn Wang (who also goes by Tifi), one of our former teaching assistants, who participated in an enriching summer program in Taiwan, an opportunity she found through the “Community Bulletin Board” in our eNews. In the article below, Jacklyn reflects on this unique experience, and at the end you will also find links to videos that bring the program to life, capturing everything from the warm airport welcome and opening ceremony to the hands-on training sessions, closing celebration and even local news coverage. This is more than just a teaching assistant’s story; it is a story of learning and growing together.
Language Connects - Culture Enriches — by Jaclyn Wang
Hi everyone, my name is Tifi. I was born in the US and joined the BVCS community in 2015. Here, I met lots of wonderful people who have always provided me with support. English is my native language, and my Chinese —learned at BVCS and in my American high school—is at an intermediate to high level. I also earned a top score of 5 on the AP Chinese exam. Even so, there is still so much more to learn. At BVCS, the weekly two-hour language and culture classes, along with my experience as a class TA, may not seem like a lot of time, but they have steadily improved my Chinese, deepened my understanding of Chinese culture, and taught me to appreciate and embrace different cultures.
After graduating from high school this year, I will soon begin a new chapter in September as I start college. This summer, however, added a remarkable page to my story. After a competitive selection process, I became one of more than 400 young people from around the world chosen to return to Taiwan to teach English, as part of the Overseas Community Affairs Council’s English camp. This opportunity allowed me to share my native language with students in Taiwan, while collaborating with peers from different backgrounds.
During the camp, I not only applied my own knowledge of the arts to help students learn English but also drew from my experience as a BVCS TA to really ensure the kids learn everything they could. What made the experience even more special was the chance to experience indigenous culture and learn the traditions of several different indigenous tribes. Their customs left a really deep impression on me. It was a uniquely unforgettable experience.
Looking back, I know that without my years of commitment and growth at Bay Valley Chinese School, I would not have had the confidence or ability to take on this challenge. Those seemingly short two-hour weekly classes have, over time, shaped my language foundation and cultural awareness in profound ways.
For me, this summer was far more than just a teaching and service experience, it was a vivid and unforgettable chapter in my life. I will carry the lessons, skills, and memories from Bay Valley with me as I continue to explore, learn, and share my stories with the world.
