Led by Ms. Becky Kao, BVCS TA Diabolo Team performed at the Mid-Autumn Asian Cultural Festival hosted by the Blackhawk Museum on October 3, delivering an exciting and impressive performance!
Now, let's hear from the team itself! Team Captain Emily Wang has written a special article sharing highlights and reflections from this memorable performance. Let’s take a look!
BVCS Diabolo Team Returns to the Blackhawk Museum’s Mid-Autumn Festival
By Emily Wang, BVCS Student Teaching Assistant
This year, the Bay Valley Chinese School (BVCS) Diabolo Team participated in the Blackhawk Museum’s Mid-Autumn Festival for the second time. The seven performers were Irene Hung, Michael Chen, Leanne Hung, Ryan Wang, Kadence Lai, team captain Emily Wang, and special guest Alvin Cheng.
The BVCS Diabolo Team was formed in 2024. Most team members practice together for an hour before Chinese school classes begin, learning basic movements and gradually working their way up to more challenging tricks. Special guest Alvin Cheng, on the other hand, has been practicing diabolo since second grade and has accumulated years of experience.
Diabolo, also known as Chinese yo-yo, is a traditional pastime commonly enjoyed in Taiwan. Although it looks fun and entertaining, mastering advanced tricks takes a great deal of time and practice. Unlike a traditional yo-yo, a diabolo is not permanently attached to its string. Performers must skillfully manipulate the string to keep the diabolo spinning and adjust its angle to maintain balance. If the speed drops or the angle shifts, the diabolo may wobble or even fall.
Advanced tricks include the vertical diabolo and double diabolo, which involves controlling two diabolos at the same time. Experienced performers can even challenge themselves to manipulate more diabolos, requiring exceptional
hand-eye coordination and control. In group performances, individual skills are only part of the equation. Focus and teamwork are equally important to ensure that everyone’s movements and timing are in sync.
BVCS Diabolo Team has also been invited to perform at community events, including the Lunar New Year celebration in Dublin. Moving forward, team members will continue to practice and improve their skills, with the hope of bringing this traditional art to more communities across the United States. Through their performances, they hope to entertain audiences while introducing more people to the cultural traditions and fun behind the diabolo.
